While in the process of recording the album, I realized that a piece I had been playing on the piano months prior to recording was about a theme that eventually lead to "Without You". I knew this was where it belonged. Originally just piano, I needed something to help it sway back and forth like emotions do, and that's where the guitar and heartbeat came in.

The heartbeat that can be heard throughout this track and a few parts in the second track is me knocking on a laundry basket I had flipped upside down and covered with a blanket. The EQ was then extremely distorted to make it sound underwater, or inside someone's chest. I felt like a little kid making art out of scraps of paper and glitter, but it gives the song just what it needs. When you're nervous or excited, you can always hear your heartbeat a little harder than normal.

The song was originally in 7/8 timing, but I decided I preferred it to have an extra count making it 4/4. Nevertheless, while recording I accidentally miscounted a measure. There is only one measure in 7/8 time. Or maybe I put it there for a reason...
